Oppenheimer by Oppenheimer

OPPENHEIMER also supply some warm pop loveliness, albeit a slightly different kind. This is breezy synth flecked euphoric stuff made by two Belfast kids. They've got a penchant for cute radio melodies whilst not remotely succumbing to blandness. There's this swelling, natural vibe to the tunes, a sense of wonder & fun fuelled determination, the kind of music you'd get on the soundtrack to a kids film but it wouldn't annoy you because they're not some sucky little american bunch o' brats or even worse, McFly or some such horror. They straddles the ground between Grandaddy, Swedepop, The Chalets & Weezer. With a bit of ELO. Good tunes indeed!

Limited edition 14-track debut album by Belfast pop duo - featuring guest vocals from Tim Wheeler (Ash). For Fans Of: Stereolab; The Postal Service and Daft Punk. Belfast boys Shaun and Rocky from Oppenheimer have spent the last eighteen months on the road; inspiring audiences from Dublin to Denver, with their synth-driven, hook-sodden electro pop. On the way they’ve supported: The Chalets, Spinto Band, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly!, Architecture in Helsinki, The Bravery, Regina Spektor and Tilly And The Wall. The bands recent STA single has seen them hailed as the '”Simon and Garfunkel of the wired generation”. Featuring vocals from Tim Wheeler (on ‘Orchid’) and partly produced in David Holmes’ Belfast studios, ‘Oppenheimer’ is the sound of a band intelligently striving towards a pop nirvana. Oppenheimer tours the UK in February ‘07 (including an album launch show in The Borderline on 08/02/07) in conjunction with this release. "A sumptuous synth-pop experience…" ROCK SOUND. ”Oppenheimer are like the Irish Flaming Lips or Mates of State. It's extremely rare for a band from Belfast to have that otherworldly sound. They're an incredible new band so look out for them!”  GARY LIGHTBODY (SNOW PATROL). “An intoxicating mix of indie-rock guitar, Moog synths, and Beach Boys-meets-Kraftwerk vocals…” AMPLIFIER MAGAZINE. "Their warm electro pop makes Oppenheimer stand apart in a city dominated by dreary guitar bands.". HOTPRESS. "Irresistibly beautiful melodies…" THE SUN. “Songs so lovely and perfectly formed, you can almost see their colours steaming out of the speakers onstage…” ALTERNATIVE ULSTER. "One of the most sublime pop moments you are likely to hear this year..." WASHINGTON POST.

it's a rather lovely record (if you happen to like upbeat indie pop in the first place), but i think Normans Weezer and Grandaddy reference might be slightly misleading (but i think i know where it's coming from). I'd rather go for I Was A Cub Scout, Death Cab For Cutie/Postal Service and, yes, Swedepop. but rest assured, it's a good indiepop record..
