Not content with one release this week Fat Cat deliver a full length from DAVID KARSTEN DANIELS. The bare bones of 'Sharp Teeth' is one man and his guitar augmented by a more than competent selection of strings, horns, slide guitar, piano, viola, cello, organ, glockenspiel etc. His vocal is tender lyrics sharp and soul searching. I'm reminded of Will Oldham at times. Definitely an interesting listen that works on many levels. On the surface there are simply good songs but if you listen closer and I suspect on repeated listens you'll hear a man searching for answers. It's worth mentioning that the artwork on this is fantastic with a cartoon of a naked man and women with the man eating the womans intestines. Yummy.David Karsten Daniels is a North Carolina-based songwriter with a background of diverse musical experiences. Among them, a childhood of hymn singing, a high school jazz band, formal university training in composition, theory, free improvisation and performance art – not to mention the broad range of influences and inspirations that have been naturally embraced over the years. These richly orchestrated songs, in which David’s voice and guitar are the foundation elements, are fleshed out by nineteen musicians and at least as many instruments.David’s previous musical projects have been released on the Bu_Hanan imprint, an extension of the Bu_Hanan Collective, which he co founded with Daniel Hart and Alex Lazara, who mixed and mastered ‘Sharp Teeth’. An immensely talented artist truly deserving of a wider audience, David and his band will be playing shows across the US late 2006, and touring the UK in support of this release from early 2007 onwards.
