What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.

My Album of the week has to be the MATT ELLIOTT Failing Songs CD. This was straight in the car and the wife asked me to turn it off within 2 minutes cos she said it made her feel like she wanted to hang herself..  I will admit it's extremely miserable and sobering. It makes Street Spirit by Radiohead sound like Steps or something. Aside from the wrist slashing thoughts and feeling it is one of the most moving records I've heard in ages. There's bits of Spanish/ Cuban music, Jewish folk music, Eastern European folks music, Beirut, Yann Tiersen.... allsorts in there and it's a truly remarkable listen from start to end. Not one single weak spot on it. The guy's a genius. If you have the Drinking Songs CD this is a perfect companion to it and listen to the two together and you'll end up a complete emotional mess. Brilliant stuff indeed.  I really can't recommend this enough.

What the label says:

October sees the release of 'Failing Songs', Matt's new album. 'Failing Songs'
is another beautiful opus which picks up where last year's 'Drinking Songs' left
off. This is what Matt has to say about the album:

"Failing Songs is kind of part 2 of the Drinking Songs Trilogy & features
the wonderful Patricia Arguelles Martinez on Violin & of course Chris Cole
on Drum duties. It was all recorded at home except the violins which were
recorded over night(s) in the village church. It's always hard to talk
objectively about ones own music so I won't.
Without wanting to put anyone off, the songs are mainly about our failures
both personal & political & no objective person can really look at the
world without accepting the fact that we as a species are basically a
failure. I'm definitely one & glad to admit it. Incidentally i believe that
the lyrics of at least one song will contravene some of the new laws passed
by the British government to curb our basic freedoms in the name of counter
terrorism but given that they are so out of touch with modern culture it
     shouldn't cause too much trouble."

The track listing runs as follows: 1. Our Weight in Oil, 2. Chains, 3. The
Seance, 4. The Failing Song, 5. Broken Bones, 6. Desamparado, 7. Lone Gunman
Required, 8. Good Pawn, 9. Compassion Fatigue, 10. The Ghost of Maria Callas,
11. Gone, 12. Planting Seeds.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.

'I can see god damnit, I can see.'
