What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Brian feeling ecstatic.

MARCIA BLAINE SCHOOL FOR GIRLS have a remarkable sounding new CD out on Highpoint Lowlife. 'Halfway into the Woods'. It begins with their hazy approximation of what true contemporary chill out should stir in you. Starting with some compulsive early Autechre drift with big flabby streaks of Gimmik & the Neo Ouija./Toytronic sound of yesteryear. It picks up on the beats front whilst retaining an ability to grow inside your mind like an unfurling venus fly trap of bliss. Ha ha ha. That's SOO pretentious. They keep the vibe going with some glitchy, melodic lounge funk before breaking into some tumbling sonic splatterbeats on the superb third track. Ant says 'Donkey Rhubarb' on a Glockenspiel tip There's a whole rich seam of electronic history running through this album from Orbital to Autechre & then through to the modern IDM players. Flicking through further it's evident he ideas run deep, the sense of melodic wonder is profound & like all decent machine music, this has bags of soul, humanity & warmth in it's micro grooves. Very impressive electronica indeed.

What the label says:

"With a name based on the fictional school of the 1961 novel and film,
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, The Marcia Blaine School For Girls is
actually comprised of three Glaswegian lads. They have been forging
their own particular approach to electronic music for the past few
years, melding such disparate styles as American Minimalism, Detroit
techno and the blunted groove of dancehall and then adding their own
distinct signature treatment - crushed rhythms and affecting haunting
melodies.

Since their inception they have released a steady stream of tracks on
compilations, 7 and 12's, for labels including Static Caravan,
Benbecula, Awkward Silence, Dalriada, Expanding, Struktur and Stuff
Records, and also previously curated a compilation of Scottish
electronica for Highpoint Lowlife. This release, Halfway Into The Woods,
is their debut full-length release, and sees them for the first time
musically incorporating vocals, and expanding on the recurring themes
and ideas hinted at on previous releases.

The three members of the band are heavily involved in running the
ever-popular Glasgow club, Numbers, and have numerous musical side
projects The Village Orchestra, Production Unit, Accrual, Rose and
Sandy, The Village Unit.

Over the past two years, they have been playing live all over the UK and
Europe, sharing bills alongside Sleeparchive, Andreas Tilliander,
Modeselektor, Isan, Jimmy Edgar, Yellotone, Joshua Treble, Mitchell
Akiyama, Shadow Huntaz and Alias, and many more."

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
