De Ma Vaere Belgiere by De Ma Vaere Belgiere (They Must Be Belgians)

DE MA VAERE BELGIERE (They Must be Belgians) provide us with an album of muddy, doomy new wave & anguished, yearning indie that screams torment circa 1980 like no other. The chord changes are symbolic of that breed of chap who's probably had sand kicked in his face by life too many times. Looming bass, chiming minor chords, echoy, down-in-the-mix drums. I can hear loads of Chameleons, bits of straggly Wire, US bands such as For Against and even early Fall in the beautiful, simple repetion of it all. This is brilliant music made by sad people for sad people & I like it tons. Pass us the kleenex love, I've gotta blow this tumor outta my nose hahaha.

Even though De Må Være Belgiere (They Must Be Belgiums) existed for 4 years, they only released 1 single. But the 3 tracks there is on that 7” single the quartet released I 1983 on Replik Muzick has secured their legacy. The music contains raw nerve, intensity and even though it shares similarities with the rest of the postpunkscene of the early eighties, the music stands out as original and dedicated. With Jesper Hede  on guitar and his raw and unpolished vocal fronting Nils Skovbjerg on guitar, Jacob Leth on bass and Majka Bjørnager in drums, De Må Være Belgiere were one of this periods most intense live experiences.
