Sonna - Smile And The World Smiles With You

Smile And The World Smiles With You by Sonna

Phew my heads a bit done in by that. Following a more straight ahead secure path are Sonna with their brand of bright tuneful instrumental post-rock. Recorded by the ubiquitous Steve Albini (also expert shoe repair) they have a new album out which has a lovely picture of some trees on the front. On Temporary Residence its pretty much what you'd expect. Good instrumental stuff for fans of Pell Mell, Tarantel, Tristeza and similar. Smile & The World Smiles With You is very impressive.

Following up the near-unanimous critical acclaim of their debut album, We Sing Loud Sing Soft Tonight, Baltimore's Sonna delivers slow-motion acrobatics with a beat you can dance to. With tempos ranging from head-bobbing to head-nodding, their blend of shimmering counterpoint guitars, buttery bass and shifting rhythms has become a trademark that discerns them from similar bands of the ilk. Once again recorded by Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio studio, the captivating energy of their live show is captured in brilliant detail, with every subtle nuance left intact. At its most dense, you feel as if the band is playing right in front of you; at its most stark, you're convinced you could walk for miles and never get any closer. It's sincere, beautiful music that works in the car just as well as it does in the bedroom. Amen.
