What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

BRAKES have a new one sided etched 7" out called Hold Me In The River. I want this to be bad so I can say Hold Me Down In The River til I drown so I don't have to listen to this again. Thus the review is born and the message is got across. Alas my great joke is unnecessary this time cos I quite like this chugging slab of indie rock from these British Sea Power folks. Comparisons??? Well I'm far too busy to listen to this more than twice and they haven't come to me yet. Short, punchy and repetitive. Noice. Actually I can hear bits of Pixies in it. is it me or does everything sound like Pixies at the moment?? if they hadn't reformed songs wouldn't sound like this at the mo.

What the label says:

· BRAKES ARE SET TO RELEASE THE FIRST SINGLE FROM THEIR HIGHLY ACCLAIMED SECOND ALBUM. “HOLD ME IN THE RIVER” IS THE OPENING TRACK FROM NEW ALBUM “THE BEATIFIC VISIONS” (OUT NOW). THEIR UNIQUE BRAND OF COUNTRY PUNK HAS CEMENTED THEIR REPUTATION AS ONE OF THE MOST VITAL BANDS AROUND AND LED TO THE BAND BEING PERSONALLY ASKED BY THE KILLERS TO SUPPORT THEM ON THEIR UPCOMING UK AND EUROPEAN TOUR. BRAKES DESCRIBE THE NEW SINGLE; “IT DIATRIBES AGAINST RELIGIOUS FERVOUR, CREATIONISM VERSUS DARWINISM, THE LOSS OF THE PRESUMPTION OF INNOCENCE, AND CELEBRATES THE SCREEN BEAUTY SCARLETT JOHANSSON, YEAH. THE BAND RECORDED THEIR OWN NO – BUDGET VIDEO FOR THE SINGLE, AND ITS F***ING BRILLIANT”

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
