'Oi Skam!!!! Where's the Team Doyobi vinyl. You're killing me. I've suffered enough. Put me out of my misery please' While I wait for the afforementiond vinyl Skam make the wait a little easier with a solo project from 808 State's Graham Massey. He's been playing at Skam parties for a while under his MASSONIX pseudonym but as far as I'm aware he hasn't released anything under that name until now. Although I could be wrong. On first listen to 'Subtracks' I was left wanting more, knowing what the Manchester Maverick is capable of. The theme throughout is aquatic and it is not only present in the sounds but in the track titles and artwork. I suppose the most obvious comparison would be Drexciya. The mix is a strange hybrid of Techno, electro, breakbeat, house, and electronica. On second listen I'm still not sure what to make of it....
A Selection of sub tracks 1996-2006 composed and recorded by Graham Massey as Massonix (Except track 5 written by Massey/Seddon). In the mid 80’s, while still recording for Factory Records’ Biting Tongues, Massey formed 808 State with Gerald Simpson and Martin Price. The rest is history... Until now, other than a 12" in 1990, most of the music Massey composed as Massonix has been for rare live sets (Warp 10th Birthday, ATP etc). Much of the music on this nautically themed album comprises elements of rhythm and melody originally taken from these live sets, which have then been reworked and assembled into finished tracks. All Synthesisers and drum machines by Graham Massey. (Moogs, Arps, Waldorf, Rolands, Casios,EM&M,Oberhiem, Sequential Circuits, Nord, Akai, Korg, EDP, Yamaha, and Quasimidi. Additional instrumentation; Guitars, Vibraphone, Pocket Trumpet, Bass Clarinet ,Bass Trombone, Astroban, Organs, Electric Pianos, Percussion and Balalaika and Hawaiian guitar, are also by Graham Massey.
