RAY RUMOURS. A delicate and simple guitar lady strumming and picking out some
fragile and quite lovely tunes. Breathy and soothing she's singing it from her
heart and not in a corny cheesy X factor desperation way. She recorded it all in her bedroom in
Madrid and I bet that was a lovely afternoon with the sun coming through the
blinds, so far from freezing England. I think there must have been some kind of
foreign Exchange because the B-side is by FRANCOIS and is recorded in Bristol and it
sounds like a dusty old piano plonking out a haunting tune with
atmospheric French words floating around it. Quite mesmerizing. It's
a fat old 7" with 3 songs on one side and 3 on the other and with every
song a gem, it's a definite for melancholy dreamers among us. I'm having one.

my favourite track on francois side is the instrumental one, aarons steps, made me cry the first time i heard it. his words work so well with the music and combine to make very honest sounding songs. The ray rumors side is ace too. the songs are simple but dark and touching. i saw her play live once with a nice trumpet player. forest songs is brilliant value and almost worth it just for the picture on the sleeve. honest. its ace.
What their label says...
about Francois:
frnois arrived in the UK from Bordeaux France in Autumn 2003. Armed with a guitar, Kaos pad and a self released album and spurred on by a frustration with the lack of inspiration or like minded souls in his homeland, he immediately threw himself into the Bristol music scene. Early Sunday morning trips to local car-boot sales led to a vast catalogue of old casio keyboards and childrens toys soon to become his trademark. For his first Bristol show in early 2004 he took to the stage alone using guitar, live samples, a drum machine and a keyboard - played simultaneously with his guitar via his feet by ingeniously extending the keys with knives. His music was marked by a mix of refreshingly playful and experimental ideas coupled with a natural pop sensibility and gentle bilingual vocals. A string of high-profile support slots with the likes of Mice Parade, Patrick Wolf and Gravenhurst, and frnois place in the Bristol DIY music community was secured. Meanwhile his beautifully hand-crafted animations and self-produced monthly zines displayed a wider artistic flair that remained true to his idiosyncratic style. His second album Les Anciennes Falaises on Bristols Stitch Stitch Records - saw him develop his sound into a rich brand of indie pop, again with lyrics flitting between French, English and even Italian on one track. His sound has been likened to that of Stereo Total, Hood and most commonly Francoise Hardy. frnois forthcoming third album The People to Forget showcases an even bolder, more mature sound with help of from the Atlas Mountains Ensemble, a cast of musical accomplices comprising a number of local talents including members of War Against Sleep, Whalebone Polly and Crescent. His trademark DIY set-up is now augmented by striking arrangements of harp, melodica, clarinet and brass. Almost orchestral in its musical flair and subtlety, frnois makes for a natural conductor, his infectious enthusiasm and unwavering ambition shining through this new material. Following a successful tour of Spain and his native France, several London shows and a slot at Munkyfest in Cheshire, UK, frnois spent this September touring the West Coast of Canada and the U.S. with three friends playing a mix of his own material and that of Arctic Circle, another Bristol based band in which he plays guitar and keyboards. He is now available for both gigs and live soundtracks to his animation shorts.
