I've been reasonably late getting into MICHAEL GIRA and late last year I got so obsessed with The Angels of Light I was unbearable to be around cos that was all I'd talk about. I've come out of that now and thankfully moved on (I can hear the cheers of my friends...). There's only 4 albums and a split to get engrossed in but while I was listening to them I pretty much ignored all other music for months. So Lumberton Trading Company have a released an LP limited to 2000 copies (vinyl only) called Songs For A Dog. This features Michael, his guitar and the most tortured soul you'll ever hear in your life. He sounds like a bitter man indeed, though I reckon he's a little puppy deep down. There's so much feeling and emotion in his music it's quite incredible. Essentially this is just singer songwriter stuff but it's much darker than you're average fay folky gear which is doing the rounds now. This is well dark and twisted yet there's so much beauty in it as well. We can hear bits of Lou Reed in his voice at time. This features some unreleased tracks and some older songs from Angels of Light/ Michael Gira solo albums. Fantastically moving stuff!LUMB004 MICHAEL GIRA 'Songs for a Dog' LP. A special limited edition collection of songs mostly culled from and only otherwise available via Michael Gira's website-only CD releases, 'Solo Recordings at Home' and 'I Am Singing to You from My Room'. Also includes three recordings only, so far, available on this release. Raw, naked and highly emotive outpourings of transcendental bliss from one of the most gifted songwriters of the past couple of decades or more. As described by the man himself, "I recorded these songs alone, at my desk, in most cases just as I was writing them - me and an acoustic guitar and one stereo microphone. I've often found that the true 'feel' of a song exists then, right at the point it's first pulled together, stronger than at any later point." Only 2000 will be made available, in high-quality packaging, complete with insert, and pressed on heavier-than-standard vinyl.
