Cyann & Ben - Words

Words by Cyann & Ben

How much you're going to like Cyann & Ben's latest single, Words, depends very much on how you took to Pink Floyd circa Interstellar Overdrive - for it is very, very similar. Or perhaps, since the duo are French, they picked up their trippy sound from Gong. A trifle quieter perhaps, at the beginning, but it soon works its way up to a thrashing Prog Rock frenzy. Words begins with a drawn, haunted vocal over a slowly mounting beat: as psychedelic as they come with its beeping synthesiser sequences and huge organ chords designed to sound retro that build and build and build. The B-side, Eyes Should Be Flames, is equally filled with 60s references, although not such an attention grabber. It has a similar structure, mounting levels of drum and guitar slowly gathering momentum. In general if people are going to base their sound quite this closely on old acts that most of their audience have forgotten I prefer it if they choose acts I approve of, and I would certainly encourage everyone who hasn't to go and listen to Piper At The Gates Of Dawn at least once. But on the other hand I already a sufficiency of early Pink Floyd recordings without resorting to modern homages.
