Thee More Shallows
History of Sport Fishing
A Norman Records recommendation (14th January 2007)

This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.
And yet there's more goodness. Thee More Shallows. Never heard of 'em probably have you? I've had a listening copy for sometime now and some of you may have noticed this on our what we've been listening to lists. It's cropped upevery so often. It's on a new label called Monotreme records which looks like it might be pretty useful. The forthcoming Red Partha Vogelbacher single is dead interesting too. More on that when it's released! The Thee More Shallows album is tremendous. Probably one of the best albums of the year so far. There's elements of Lambchop in there though it doesn't sound like them. Elements of post rock but it's not post rock. Bits of Death Cab For Cutie and Grandaddy, again it doesn't sound like them. Melancholy without being depressing It's a really laid back affair with tunes to die for. I'm pretty confident you'll like this if you like any of the above bands. The 2nd track on it (8th Ring Of Hell) is up for song of the year in my book. History Of Sport Fishing is sweet as.

A history of sport fishing is the brilliantly accomplished debut album from thee more shallows.11 tracks of elegance and beauty, tinged with melancholy and interweaving moments of quiet contemplation and soaring emotion, this is an album that is brooding and uplifting.the vocals of dee kessler, rise from melancholic half-whispers that build in pitch and emotion. musically ranging from spare minimalism to lush arrangements, a history of sport fishing layers quiet melodies with dramatic waves of guitar, violin, cello, keyboards, banjo, glockenspiel, piano and field recordings.if it's comparisons you're angling for, try Sparklehorse, Mercury rev, Arab strap, Yo la tengo or Kingsbury manx.
