What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Brian feeling happy.

A luminous green vinyl 12" EP of pure electro breaks stuff has arrived on Weme records of Belgium from PAUL BLACKFORD. This guy started his career with an EP on Ed DMX's Breakin' records & now arrives this latest 6 track journey through deep, warm soundscapes of classic tech-electro. For the IDM fan out there I'd source early Claro Intelecto/Ai records as a reference point plus some of Andrea Parker's melodic minimal gear. It's pretty purist stuff with some sweet, soulful old skool synth melodies that'll possibly appeal to the Detroit massive. Also think of a more glacial Radioactive Man without all the party wrecking basslines on track one. Sweet!

About the humble 12":

The 12" is the big brother of records as it's an fatter version of the 7", with a vast scope for an array of remixes and B sides. They are slightly less portable their smaller inched brethren but they're by no means inferior. Often the grooves are spaced wider apart and thus sound much much better. You can fit ample tracks on and if worse comes to worse they make fine plates (should your crockery go awol). Yes, there's a hole but holes are easy to sort out. Once again they're available on many different colours and guises. The best thing about a 12" is the potential vastness of the artwork. Also playable on many speeds!!
