What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Brian feeling ecstatic.

Hmnnn. There's plenty of great stuff in this week so why are we bigging up a re-issue of Bristolian toper Matt Elliot's THIRD EYE FOUNDATION full lengthers (Ghost, You Guys Kill Me & Little Lost Soul)??? Because the man is a genius that's why. Who else has dissolved the ghosts of "trip-hop", drum 'n' bass & discordant space rock into an abrasive yet spiritual soundtrack to disturbed dreams & melancholic bliss? There's a darkly paranoid edge to this music, whilst being largely accessible, that renders your mood desolate yet yr ears are nailed to the speakers. The beats veer between languid & manic, lo-fi twisted D'n'B in parts, atmosphere drenched synth lines predominate, whilst the eerie effects & compulsive soundscapes he builds are hugely original & widescreen. You can even hear the influence he had over mid period Hood (his protégés) , as they took up a naive & spellbound approach to dub textures & progressive electronics. I can hear some of U-Ziq's inspired ghost train scattershot drill 'n' bass experiments on 'Ghost' for one. I could write all day about this music. It's Brilliant. It's also dangerous & fresh even though some is nearly 10 years old. You get 3 albums with a total of 12 extra tracks & mixes spread over the 3 discs for around a tenner. (I poo poo on Your Ju-Ju' isn't included) We heartily recommend you invest in a piece of electronic history here. x Brian Dormantgrouse

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.

'Are you gonna charge me for that bin?'
