Anyone not heard MONOLAKE by now? They/him/her produce icy, hypnotic & melodic pure techno from the vaults of Berlin & now there's a geat white vinyl remix job of 'Alaska', the 'A' side re-fitted by Surgeon, one of the UKs pioneers. His minimal funked up attitude suits the tune mightily well retaining all the atmosphere of the original whilst trancing you out with a fine techno-tastic rhythym. Oh la la. The Substance remixes on the flip have their roots more in the heart of distorted digital dubstep than owt else. Plenty of fuzzy belches & sinister dubby echoes entwined with a niggling synth hook make for absorbing listening. His other remix retains the synth line but a pacier mid 90s techno pulse is in evidence albeit with all the technical prowess of modern day programming. One of the better 12"s I've heard with this hallmark of quality on he sleeve. Go there. About the humble 12":

The 12" is the big brother of records as it's an fatter version of the 7", with a vast scope for an array of remixes and B sides. They are slightly less portable their smaller inched brethren but they're by no means inferior. Often the grooves are spaced wider apart and thus sound much much better. You can fit ample tracks on and if worse comes to worse they make fine plates (should your crockery go awol). Yes, there's a hole but holes are easy to sort out. Once again they're available on many different colours and guises. The best thing about a 12" is the potential vastness of the artwork. Also playable on many speeds!!
