Now I'm absolutely brimming with excitement about the arrival of the SUNN O))) & BORIS collaboration album 'Altar' on Southern Lord. This really is a rewarding listen. Sure it's dark and super heavy (no surprises there) but only in places. In amongst the darkness is haunting white light with delicate female vocals. Features Dylan Carlson (Earth) and Joe Preston (Melvins / Thrones). This is very cinematic sounding in places with huge soundscapes and layers of feedback and distortion. There's a real evil undertone in the music. It's doom but not as we know it. It's far more considered than sheer heavy walls of sound. If your a fan of either bands then you're gonna want this baby. Gorgeous packaging as usual. LP due in February!

Southern Lord are extremely honored to present the new collaboration album from Boris and sunn 0))) entitled: “Altar”. This album is NOT a split album. “Altar” is a true collaboration album between sunn 0))) and Boris that is a result of both bands conceptualizing, writing and recording the album together as one entity. Both groups have stepped outside their previous sounds and created a wholly unique album that stands on its own unique ground. There are elements of each groups trademark sound within the album but true to each groups progressive and experimental aspects, “Altar” moves into a completely new dimension. Also contributing additional entrancing textures are the guest collaborators on this album including: • Jesse Sykes (vocalist:Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter) vocals on “Sinking Belle”. • Kim Thayil (Soundgarden) guitar on “Blood Swamp”. • Joe Preston (earth, Thrones, Melvins, High on Fire) vocals on: “Akuma No Kuma”. Also: Bill Herzog, Phil Wandescher (Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter), Rex Ritter (Jessamine, Fontanelle), Tos Niewenhuizen (Beaver, GOD) , and Steve Moore (earth) ALTAR is packaged in a high quality mini-gatefold CD sleeve beautifully printed by our friends at Stoughton (they are responsible for the Southern Lord gatefold LP jackets over the years). A 12 page booklet is bound in to the sleeve, with metallic inks and spot varnishes. Surreal, evocative artwork by Aaron Horkey & Atuso and photography by WT Nelson and Rose Kallal complete this unique package into a work of art.
