I know the whole folk thing is getting a bit over played now but there's still some magical stuff coming through. The thing is, when folk is done well, then it's a magical experience. Everyone with a truly musical ear (should) loves the likes of Nick Drake & Jose Gonzalez but it's yer DIY homespun stuff that hasn't yet gone global that deserves exposure & love. We've got here this grey vinyl LP by ASA IRONS & SWAAN MILLER & even though i thought it was gonna be an hour of blistering noise terrorism fed through a load of rusty piping & sludge, I was even more stunned to realise a bona fide slab of heartwarming genius had just thrown itself onto the turntable. Just effortless, magical folk music. One sublimely picked & strummed guitar topped with honeyed male/female vocals that create an intimacy not unlike the backroom at one of my locals, The Chemic. This is largely psych free, so probably not of interest to the real "beards" amongst you. Merely the cream of contemporary folk, containing songs that will course through your soul. This is 3 years old too, has probably been around for ages, yet I wanna shout about it's humble majesty right now. This really would be my album of the week.....
Recorded in 2003 as he was travelling around the country, this very simple, intimate, and home spun record continues to stun all who have heard it as a self released CDR. Asas vocals are complemented so perfectly by his dear friend Swann that the songs resonate with the mutual knowing only old close friends can share. If you are at all familiar with his efforts in FEATHERS, or watched him hunch over a guitar with WTICH, or have been perplexed and amazed at his saw blade solo work, this document will be an irreplaceable eye-opener to how well grounded and concurrently high reaching Asas music can be. Limited to 600 copies on opaque grey vinyl, packaged in black jackets with art by Hillary Irons glues to the front. This is one of those records, a classic.
