What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.

Let's face it... There hasn't been much great electronica on Warp lately. What them going all indiefied with Maximo Park and then more singer songwriter/ weirdness with the likes of Grizzly Bear and Gravenhurst, it's nice to have a decent electronica album out on the label. Firstly I wanna say this is nothing new or groundbreaking at all. But what it is a startling collection of tunes taking in the likes of Four Tet, Aphex, Squarepusher, Boards of Canada and spitting it out into this wonderful 11 track beast. The opener 'Herr Bar' is simply one of the best pieces of electronic music I've heard in frickin' ages. Initially it all sounds quite Four Tet etc but as you progress through the album other influences become more apparent. It doesn't feel like it's ripping anyone off though. In fact it sounds like a total breath of fresh air and it's going to help re kindle my love of melodic electronica which had gone awol for a while. If you're a fan of the above artists I reckon you'd totally dig this. It's seriously good Both formats come with an 8 track 3" CD with initial quantities. This is limited to just 750 copies apparently. Cocking marvellous.

What the label says:

Its Chris Clark’s time to take his place within the top ranks of Warp's best electronic music makers. Shortened to Clark, he’s produced the album of his career and one of the favourite albums of the Warp office this year. It seems like a new start for Clark, Body Riddle is meditative, simplified but with more musical colour, subtle sonics, melody and rhythm, the drill and bass workouts of older work seem to have been left behind, with Chris finding the confidence to do exactly what he wants and do it really well. On some tracks Chris plays neatly edited drums which gives the music a live feeling, the straight melodics of Herr Bar, the dense, oceanic cymbal splashes and droning violins of Frau Wav, are a strong example of the album's intuitive development. Each track subtly transforms itself into something stranger than it was at the beginning whilst still keeping it’s integrity with incredibe attention to detail. Examples are the tidy reflective analogue strings and hip hop handclaps of ‘Ted’, the martial boom-bap drums of ‘Vengeance Drools’ which opens itself into a delicate chorus of voices and harp. This album sets him apart and establishes him firmly as a major Warp talent. Body Riddle seems designed to leave a lasting impression, pull on your heart strings, and also to sound very fresh, so give it some space this autumn; you will fall in love with it.

About the humble LP:

The LP is the daddy of formats. 12" inches of sheer joy. The LP adds to the glory of the 12" record as it can be played at a slower speed (33rpm instead of the usual 45rpm for singles), consequently more musical joy can be had. Played on a decent deck the sound of an LP is about a million times better than any other format. They look fantastic...... a nice gatefold sleeve with a information rich inner sleeve will keep you entertained for hours even before your stylus has chance to make eye contact with it's 12" prey. An essential part of musical heritage which will never be forgotten. It still does play at a multitude of speeds but as it's recorded to be played slower they normally sound ridiculous sped up. Though double albums can make up for this slight inadequacy by ramming more tunes into your ears for your money. Utterly essential.
