What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Phil feeling unmoved.

First up is ebay favourites Guillemots. Now you'd have been forgiven for thinking their last single was good by the way it flew off the shelves. In fact it became a nice little earner for anyone who bought it as within weeks it was fetching £80 plus. Bonkers. After being mentally scarred by the Kenny G isms of the last single it was with some trepidation that we approached this new one. But for an old 80's sophisticated pop fan like me its a bit of a treat. It sounds exactly like 3rd album era Aztec Camera with bits of Prefab Sprout, Wah! The Waterboys and The Kane Gang thrown in............or think about the exact mid point between Matt Bianco and Mercury Rev. A well crafted pop tune with a completely unnecessary big band style brass section that will have Jools tinkling away on the old Joanna on their inevitable appearance on his 'Later' show. The B side has hints of Arcade Fire but is overly long and self indulgent (drop the sax solos guys).

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
