Nina Nastasia
On Leaving

This record left our Phil feeling happy.
NINA NASTASIA has left her native home of Touch & Go and moved to Fat Cat. I so wish I was off to that Touch & Go festival this weekend. Life is cruel..... Anyway Nina is back with a new album which on first listen didn't do much for me. I saw her live a few years ago and I was amazed by how good she was. She is truly a talented lady. Never wanting to give up on someone good I played the album again and second time it made so much more sense. Once more it has Albini engineering so the sound is excellent. Every space is filled and nothing is excessive. In fact sometimes the sparseness of the music fills the speakers more than the sound. I hope that made sense. Essentially Nina is a singer songwriter but the songs she writes are superb and her voice is tremendous. This is as good as any other album I've heard by her. So many good records this week!

What their label says...
In 2006, Nina Nastasia recorded a new album, 'On Leaving' (again recorded by Steve Albini) and signed to a new label, Fat Cat. The move from Touch & Go implies "nothing scandalous," says Nina, "just moving, the way you move sometimes. This is a good move all around." Nina Nastasia's long-standing peer relationship with engineer Steve Albini and musical organizer Kennan Gudjonsson makes its fourth iteration here, and 'On Leaving' is realised as well by veteran members of Nina's band, Dylan Willemsa (viola), Jay Bellerose (drums), Steven Beck (piano) and Jim White (drums).
