What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Brian feeling happy.

Also, The Besnard Lakes have a wicked 10" out on t'caravan. It's a load of fat, pissed wasps stuck in Sonic Boom's flange-drone box trying to escape cos they're late for an important wasp soccer match then they're off! Stripy scarves a-waving in the sunlight. Oh shit, I played it at the wrong speed. It's actually a tender blend of chiming ethereal guitars, Valentines tremelo (that was the wasps..) understated drum machine & wistful vocals hanging onto the shirtails of a perfect post-shoegazing slice of melancholy. For fans of the poppier end of Low, Galaxie 500 & Spiritualized. It kinda sounds Australian but is actually Canadian & could have been released on Sarah did it not sound so NOW.

What the label says:

Prior to the release of the bands new album and following their respected first album Volume One, The Besnard Lakes bring forth this 10” vinyl record. Starting with the mysterious promise of a eno-esque thrumm and building into a Flaming Lips soundtrack to David Lynch’s Eraserhead. This is spectral drone with a nod to prime MBV’s subterranean melodies and ecstatic crescendos. Two startling tunes reeking of violence and romanticism then. Is this the new prog?

About the humble 10":

The 10" sits somewhere in between the 7" and 10" (kind of like a wierd cousin). This awkward variant exists for no other reason aside from to be different from it's other family members. It can provide less music than a 12" but more than a 7". It's almost like a budget 12" or a posh 7". Either way it's wierd and it needs sorting out. Maybe it's quirkyness has helped it carry on defying all rules and convention? Importantly though it plays at a multitude of speeds so it is still quintessentially a total bargain (albeit a total freak of a bargain).
