Rather Ripped by Sonic Youth

Well I feel honoured to be able to review a new CD by some true masters of discordant alt rock. Yes, der yoof are back with their 1st album proper since 'Murray Street' and from the opener I'm hooked. Not quite the return to the psychotically twisted days of yore, rather a free & easy slanted & enchanted pop treat. Remember these people are all well into their 40s. It's undeniably Sonic Youth but they seem to have found this gorgeous ability to craft classic tunes once more instead of disappearing up various avant garde cul-de-sacs. They also sound really, naturally New York. Does anyone remeber Eggs? There's a touch of that skewed alien pop in these grooves. If ever a band could reach out to people it's der Yoof. Utilizing their influences yet condensing them into natural & accesible shapes, I could actually see this great return to form winning them a few new converts. The most fun since 'Goo', It's caled 'Rather Ripped' & is on CD only for the moment with a vinyl edition to follow on Goofin' real soon. If you missed the ltd 7", the tracks are tagged on to this UK edition CD only.
