What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Maggie feeling happy.

Now I have the real deal high five to Belle and Sebastian that being the new eagerly awaited album from Glasgow's Camera Obscura. The John Peel favourites have created a feast of darling Indie swing. Chiming guitars, lush vocals, sweeping violins and chord hooks to fish even the biggest coi carp. Like recent B&S it's got that Motown type atmosphere but I suppose it's so Glasgow that the sound belongs to them now. I can see a girl in small flowered dress and a boy in green cardigan smooching on a grassy knoll in the heat of the day with a home made bottle of snake bite pulled tightly close. Nods to the Cranberries and Delgados I think as well

What the label says:

CAMERA OBSCURA have grown to become an important name in the international pop scene. More than 50.000 copies sold to this moment are good prove of their ascending career, with the highlight of recent sold-out shows in New York and SXSW, witnessed by high profile fans Mike Myers and Conor Oberst (BRIGHT EYES). The eyes of the international pop scene are set on "Let's get out of this country": a collection of ten perfect pop songs, absolutely no filler, where the band from Glasgow looks at classic pop through country and soul tinted lenses, influenced by a wide variety of heroes - from Jimmy Webb to Lloyd Cole, from Connie Francis to Skeeter Davis, from the SUPREMES to David Lynch. In Autumn 2005, Camera Obscura travelled from Glasgow to Stockholm to begin work on their third album with acclaimed producer Jari Haapalainen (Ed Harcourt, THE CONCRETES, INTERNATIONAL (NOISE) CONSPIRACY), and some of the string musicians they used have recently toured with Brian Wilson or Arthur Lee & LOVE; the album was recorded in the same studios where Neneh Cherry or Robyn have previously recorded, and it was mixed at the same place used by THE MAGIC NUMBERS or Per Gessle from ROXETTE fame. Among the contributors to this album we find Victoria Bergsman from THE CONCRETES, singer-songwriter Brita Persson or members of Swedish pop bands such as THE TOURETTES, LAAKSO or SPEEDMARKET AVENUE. A timeless album, delicately orchestrated, with which we're sure CAMERA OBSCURA will confirm the importance of their song legacy. These are songs that last forever, that will go with you forever. For all vinyl lovers we are releasing a deluxe limited edition (cover and inlet in glossy hard paper and 180 gr. vinyl).

About the humble LP:

The LP is the daddy of formats. 12" inches of sheer joy. The LP adds to the glory of the 12" record as it can be played at a slower speed (33rpm instead of the usual 45rpm for singles), consequently more musical joy can be had. Played on a decent deck the sound of an LP is about a million times better than any other format. They look fantastic...... a nice gatefold sleeve with a information rich inner sleeve will keep you entertained for hours even before your stylus has chance to make eye contact with it's 12" prey. An essential part of musical heritage which will never be forgotten. It still does play at a multitude of speeds but as it's recorded to be played slower they normally sound ridiculous sped up. Though double albums can make up for this slight inadequacy by ramming more tunes into your ears for your money. Utterly essential.
