Stuart A Staples - Leaving Songs

Leaving Songs by Stuart A Staples

Stuart A. Staples obviously thinks the big fat 'A' in his name is enigmatic. Well I know it stands for ACE! Even if the bespectacled heathen next to me starts laughing every time he hears the mans voice. I don't care. From the off, his new album takes you straight back into the seedy boozers, sordid hotel rooms, tatty casinos & dark, damp streets of another place, another time. The music is the usual classic melancholy joy, comparisons ranging from Lambchop to Love to Nancy & Lee to Leonard Cohen. It all sounds like another great 'sticks album to be truthful, soulful & twinkling, the upbeat & the downtrodden perfectly juxtaposed, or even like a sozzled cabaret singer with just enough glint left in his eye to belt out another number & down that last Jamesons, straight, no ice. 10 classics in waiting on 'Leaving Songs', 2 collaborations with smouldering lady accompaniment, 1 album to treasure. Awwww! LP/CD through Beggars Banquet.
