What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.

Something to cheer you up is the new Hood single. The long awaited return of the Leeds four... Firstly I'd like to start by saying I love this single. 5 tracks on dbl 7" and CD, 4 new tracks and 1 album track... the vinyl is limited to 500 copies. So that's the facts and figures sorted. It starts off like Prefuse 73, cuts into a Slits sample and then turns into more familiar indie territory. It's very hifi, very polished and most notably very very pop. Layers and layers, there's so much in there.... the guitars towards the end are very Sonic Youth and there's a guitar solo. Something you don't expect from a Hood record. This is utter genius.... it just gets better. One of the singles of the year! It's good to see someone doing something different rather than following the same trends as everyone else. Also of note is the last track featuring Dose One which to me sounds like the best thing Four Tet  never made. It's almost like Four Tet and Autechre remixing a Bjork track. And it's got ice cream van noises.... I could talk about the greatness of this single for a long time but alas time doesn't permit.... Just fecking buy it. You won't be disappointed!

What the label says:

Hood signpost the release of their forthcoming album with a new EP, The Lost You. The title track is a sonically incredible blast of fractured jittering rhythms, centred around cut-up samples of Robert Wyatts voice. Propelled along on a blistering beat, this densely-textured slab of adventure-pop is the first to be taken from the bands upcoming album. It is backed here by 4 tracks exclusive to this EP. "The Lost You" stutters and stammers (a la Prefuse73) and even pauses for a fragment of dialogue from what appears to be an aborted live show: "The same problem as usual," declares a Germanic female voice, feeding back into Hoods own absorbing sense of melancholy. "You know that I dont ever have the time to witness the passing of these years," proclaims Cris(is), wearily, "I dedicate this day to you."

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
