What the label says about Adult Acne:
"Dark Britpop gems that ripple with untold menace. The Boyfriends won't disappoint" NME
"Soaring romance and sawing guitars in a heady Mudhoney-meets-The Smiths rush" Metro (on 'I Love You')
"Global love is not far away" Spill Magazine
"Rather dark" The Sun
"I see a lot of music being made for gregarious people who have never wanted for a party invitation but we make music for the people who don't get invited to parties." So says singer Martin Wallace of his band The Boyfriends' strangely anthemnic new single 'Adult Acne', set for release on May 8 through Boobytrap Records.
Fuelled by abrasive guitar riffs and thundering drums, the track is a delicate meditation on life, and love. "The song was written at a time when I found it impossible to get a first glance from anyone, let alone a second," he says. "I'm aware that it's a fairly embarrassing thing to admit to but I think a lot of people go through times when they feel doomed to a life of microwave dinners for one."
The Boyfriends offer a refreshing alternative to the current dominant wave of buoyant British rock, something picked up on by the NME, who, when garlanding debut single 'I Love You' as runner-up Single Of The Week, opined that "the chipper likes of Franz Ferdinand and the Arctic Monkeys have so far ignored quintessential British doom and gloom, leaving these sharp-suited London gents to bitch-slap emotional, Suede-like guitar pop back into our hearts."
Later in the review, it was suggested that you could "almost hear Morrissey writing a letter of congratulations", but the former Smiths singer went one better by attending their next London show at the Metro Club. "It was a teenage dream come true", reflects a still shocked Martin.
