Daniel Johnston - Lost & Found

Lost & Found by Daniel Johnston

Right, can I just say, I refuse point blank to acknowledge Daniel Johnston as the unfettered genius some deluded folk make him out to be. You'd think he were Jesus judging by the level of fawning martyrdom that's been placed above his bemused head in the cult R&R hall of (in)fame(y). He's funny in a "look at that scruffy backwoods weirdo trying to sing" way. However, I've got a new CD by him called 'Lost & Found' & by the end of the first tune I'm rather in awe of his unhinged take on scuzzy barroom rock, namely 'Rock This Town' His stunted, quavering voice does have real charm & I can see how he's inspired a whole bunch of loners & losers to grab the rock baton & stumble with it all the way to the nearest cheap bar & trade it for a crate of coors. By the second track I'm thinking I'd much rather chill to this than anything The Flaming Lips have done in recent years. Like Beefheart & Waits, I feel the cuddly loon could well win his way into my heart starting with this 14 tracker. Oh god. I'll have to eat that pie again.......Sketchbook are proud as punch to release this judging by the press release!
