Speaking of Iron and Wine - here is the new collaborative effort between Iron and Wine and Calexico on Touch and Go Records. Its a hit and miss effort but the hits are worth the admission price alone. Opener 'He Lays in the Reins' is a superb Iron and Wine tune with some fantastic instrumentation - there's some odd Welsh singing that comes from nowhere about half way through - I really don't know what that is all about. As the album wears on there's one or two rootsy type things that sound like filler but there's still about 3 or 4 Iron and Wine tunes up with the best of their back catalogue so this is essential for any fan. As far as Calexico are concerned - I'm less of a fan but it seems that on this record Iron and Wine handles most of the vocals whilst Calexico add instrumental flourishes. I think that's how it works. So it could appeal to Iron and Wine fans more than Calexico - but it you like both....perfect.Be the first to review this record.
