Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Face the Truth

Face the Truth by Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks

4...according to our on Tue 28 Nov, 2006.

New Stephen Malkmus on Domino.I thought for a moment he had dispensed with his Jicks but there they are on the back sleeve. Thank God for that.  Talking of people too clever for their own good (as I was a bit earlier) this is the trap Malkmus has been in for many a year but...... opener 'Pencil Rot' has an angular post punk approach with squeaky keyboards. Malkmus employs falsetto to good effect. He's not labouring - it's skewed avant rock. Second tune employs the same tactic -  he sounds so much more alive than he has recently and there's little or no signs of Groundhogs style excess. Unlike the previous two LPs, this sounds like a thoroughly modern record though 'Freeze the Saints' is Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain' style dreamy malaise. Not always easy on the ear but that's a plus point. It's time he grew a beard.
