What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

Not one but 2 Tarentel CD's out this week. Both EP's on CD only courtesy of Temporary Residence. One called Big Black Square and t'other called Paper White. The latter is a 4 track EP and BBS is a 1 track 43 minute expedition (note careful choice of word expedition...). Apparently these are companion releases to the last album or something. That was act 1 and these are the concluding acts. Paper White is the post rock EP and Big Black Square is just post with no rock... Kind of avant garde rumbles and hisses. I think it may better if you play 'em both at the same time. Or alternatively play neither and go and have summat to eat which is what I'm gonna do before I review the next thing....

What the label says:

The companion EP to Paper White, Big Black Square was the final recording made during the We Move Through Weather recording sessions. This single 43-minute piece is entirely improvised, and is without a doubt the darkest release in Tarentel's lengthy catalog. This EP reveals more about the process with which Tarentel's songs are developed, perhaps more clearly than any other release. The curtain is pulled back to reveal all their tricks, and somehow you still don't quite understand how they do it.

About the humble CD single:

Another digital format and even though they can hold 80 minutes of information (like a CD album would) record companies only fill up a small portion of the disc. Sometimes only 1 or 2 tracks on there totalling 5 minutes or so. It's like going to a restaurant and getting a plate of food with 2 green beans on and wondering where the rest of your meal is. Sometimes they're lovingly packaged though and when the music is good then you're into a winner. Also you get videos on there sometimes which you can watch on your computer. That is excellent.
