David Thomas Broughton's debut CD on Birdwar records is also dedicated to John Peel. Its a frightening thought that without DJ's willing to stick their necks out on unheard of bands/artists then people as good as David Thomas Broughton are going to remain unheard. The music here is based around a guitar looping over with one of those effects pedals where you can layer up the sound. The main surprise comes when Mr Broughton opens his mouth - his voice is a wonderful low soulful affair that recalls folkies like Ewan Macoll AND big voices sixties soul/gospel singers AND Billy Mackenzie from The Associates at his most restrained.... it really is from another era completely and this is what is going to make him stand out from the other well meaning kids that fiddle about knowledgably with guitars and effects pedals. The album is a sprawling affair, recorded in one take in a church. It is only held back by the limitations of the recording technique (ie every song gathers layers throughout so there is a lack of dynamics and changeability) but that is a minor quibble. From the reactions of others in the office this is going to be a love it or hate it affair. I know firmly which side I am on. I heartily recommend this CD.
