What the label says: The new James Yorkston ep is a something of a revelation. A five-track song cycle comprised of original material, a stunning cover of Lal and Mike Waterson’s ‘Scarecrow’, and three newly arranged traditional songs, ‘Someplace Simple’ marks a subtle change for James Yorkston. Old traits are still present - exquisite and suitably understated arrangements, delicate playing, a voice of warmth and rough texture - but on thisrecord James seems to be in a different place from whence he came with 2001’s ‘Moving Up Country’… The sound is gloriously sparse, where it was once glorious and near symphonic, and the starkness of the songs themselves lends itself to James’ subtle interpretations, and the smaller ensemble with which he is playing.

About the humble 12":

The 12" is the big brother of records as it's an fatter version of the 7", with a vast scope for an array of remixes and B sides. They are slightly less portable their smaller inched brethren but they're by no means inferior. Often the grooves are spaced wider apart and thus sound much much better. You can fit ample tracks on and if worse comes to worse they make fine plates (should your crockery go awol). Yes, there's a hole but holes are easy to sort out. Once again they're available on many different colours and guises. The best thing about a 12" is the potential vastness of the artwork. Also playable on many speeds!!
