The Walkmen....Ah! The Walkmen! Grandoise, epic, totally distinctive & rather bloody excellent. This New York 5 piece blew me totally out of the window with the single, 'The Rat', a frantic euphoric number about being fucked over by someone, no doubt. (& included here!) There's nothing else quite so astonishing on here but how could you better perfection? Anyone who's heard their earlier work will attest, these guys know how to make a breathtaking torch song. Somewhere between The Associates & Joshua Tree era U2 (in that whole soul wrenching dramatic way, NOT the stadium pomposity, natch!) married with the lo-fi basement roughness of The Strokes. Even touches of the post rock cannon are brushed upon ala Sigur Ros or Godspeed on one track. You really have to hear them for yourselves. A very special & almost monumental group.
