Britta Phillips & Dean Wareham - L'Avventura

L'Avventura by Britta Phillips & Dean Wareham

Originally released in 2003, but unavailable for two years now due to label issues, L’Avventura was conceived as a side project for Luna bandmates (now husband & wife) Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips.

Produced by legend Tony Visconti (Bowie, T.Rex) at Philip Glass’s Looking Glass Studios in New York City, the album is a mix of duets, originals and covers (songs by Opal, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Madonna, The Doors, and Silver Jews). Wareham plays guitars; Phillips, bass and keyboards, they sing together and separately, joined by drummer Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley). Visconti himself plays extra guitar, piano and Mellotron, and contributed signature string arrangements on seveal tracks.

Later in 2003 Sonic Boom (the other creative genius behind the Spacemen 3) remixed four tracks from the album, removing the drums and adding drones, tremeloes and rain. These remixed tracks were released on the Sonic Souvenirs EP — three of them have now been added to this deluxe edition of L’Avventura. With Luna disbanding in 2005, Dean & Britta continue to record for Zoe/ Rounder (releasing Back Numbers in 2007), but L’Avventura is the official first release on Wareham’s own label Double Feature Records. Dean & Brita are currently writing songs and score for a program of 13 Andy Warhol Screen Tests short silent films shot by Warhol at the Factory between 1964 and 1966. The debut performance of these pieces will take place in at the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts in October, to be followed early in 2009 by shows in Columbus, Minneapolis, Vancouver, Seattle, New York and elsewhere.
