Unbelievably, this is the debut LP from Grand Central’s Funky Fresh Few. With previous collabs, including the quality ‘Drop Jewels’ with Afu Ra and a slew of other 12s, this lot are not exactly beat rookies. Continuing the US/UK theme established with the likes of Afu Ra and Tony D, this set includes contributions from underground favourites Q Ball and Curt Cazal, and science dropper Craig G. There’s a nice balance between instrumentals and vocals during the 16 tracks on offer. Personal choices include the melancholic pianos on ‘Dimes Got’ featuring Dimes and the broody sounding backdrop to ‘Sageblaze’ featuring Sage. Although the beats are superbly crafted throughout, some may find that the use of so many emcees on one project takes away from the consistency of the album. As soon as you get a little flavour from one emcee, it’s on to some next shit. And I think maybe in these times buyers may want to invest in something with a little more depth, rather than what feels at times like a singles compilation, however high the standard of production.
