What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.

Also quite liked the Do Make Say Think LP but to me it wasn't enormously different to the others. But then I did only get chance to play it once this week. And Yet And Yet And yet is yet more experimental instumental guitar post rock stuff for you... They do it very well too.... bless....

What the label says:

The third full-length by Do Make Say Think marks another quantum leap by this Toronto-based instrumental rock band. Their space- and drone-rock foundations continue to serve as the launching pad for experimentation with jazz-inflected motifs, but with this third album, the group's pop sensibility is also on fine display. Melodic themes laid out by guitars and horns wind along a burbling brook of fat analog synths and phased percussion, tiny subtle details are worked into the mix on every track, and the whole record just pulses with warmth and soul.

Once again recorded by band members and mixing wizards Charles and Ohad, the stacks of tube gear combined with digital editing have yielded a thick, intricate sound overall -- highly detailed yet still somehow wrapped in a translucent gauze. Most of the tracking was done at guitarist Justin's apartment, then brought to the studio. Unlike the band's previous effort, Goodbye Enemy Airship The Landlord Is Dead (cst010), which resonated with the rural atmosphere of its barnyard recording location, the new album is much more up-front-sounding. The arrangements pump with bottom end and the interweaving melodic elements are beautifully shaped and placed. While the album conjures diverse emotions, there is something consistently ebullient and effervescent about each of the songs. Aesthetically and technically, & Yet & Yet is DMST's strongest and most evocative work to date.

About the humble LP:

The LP is the daddy of formats. 12" inches of sheer joy. The LP adds to the glory of the 12" record as it can be played at a slower speed (33rpm instead of the usual 45rpm for singles), consequently more musical joy can be had. Played on a decent deck the sound of an LP is about a million times better than any other format. They look fantastic...... a nice gatefold sleeve with a information rich inner sleeve will keep you entertained for hours even before your stylus has chance to make eye contact with it's 12" prey. An essential part of musical heritage which will never be forgotten. It still does play at a multitude of speeds but as it's recorded to be played slower they normally sound ridiculous sped up. Though double albums can make up for this slight inadequacy by ramming more tunes into your ears for your money. Utterly essential.
