I’ve had a lot of prettiness in my ears so far this morning, now it’s time for some ‘orrible man-rock! The first song on this album really reminds me of Marilyn Manson’s breakthrough hit ‘Beautiful People’. My quip of “Marilyn Manson’s let himself go” got heartier laughs in the office than any of my “...let himself go” quips in recent memory. It’s actually not bad at all but the pounding drumbeat and “evil” vocal affectations. The second track once again smacks of some kind of ‘90s nu-metal stylings but it’s delivered with an unhinged weirdness like that last Racebannon album mixed with Rudimentary Peni.

These guys have been around for ages and I never got around to checking them out ‘cause I thought they’d be mega bleak but actually this is quite accessible cartoony pounding goth-rock with a chunky ‘90s sound that’ll appeal to people who are into stuff like Dope Body, Murder City Devils, Gwar, Ink & Dagger or Bad Guys. It’s a bit cheeseball but a thoroughly entertaining bit of chunky goth-punk silliness nonetheless.

Press release

Arabrot's self titled sixth album is scheduled for a worldwide release through Fysisk Format on August 19th. The album succeeds the Steve Albini produced Solar Anus, which gave the band a Norwegian Grammy, listed as a top ten underground album of 2012 in Mojo and recieved widespread good reviews:

"As unsettling as a thunderstorm approaching a medieval battle" 8/10 NME

"One of Europe's best heavy rock bands" 5/5 The Stool Pigeon

While writing this album, singer and guitarist Kjetil Nernes inhabited an old abandoned church just across the border in Sweden. A pastoral swedish countryside where time has stood still for generations, where evenings of pietus christianity followed days of hard labour in the soil, playing mind gimes with the devil. The album features a widened family of Arabrot-collaborators, most notably Emil Nikolaisen (Serena Maneesh/4AD) who in addition to recording and mixing the album, also plays bass and does backup vocals.

Norwegian experimental music stalwarts Lasse Marhaug and Erland Dahlen (Nils Petter Molvær/Madrugada) have also done substansial supplies of sound. The studio was also visited by Laura Pleasants of Kylesa who does vocals on Arrabal's dream. The lyrical content follows familiar Arabrot patterns: Inspiration from early 20th century surrealists like Georges Bataille and Robert Desnos, mixed with a fascination for the mythologies of ancient greece and the Old Testament. Recorded and mixed by Emil Nikolaisen at Malabar Studio in Oslo. Mastered by Jason Ward at Chicago Mastering.
