Fresh from an appearance in many critics / stores’ 2012 “Albums of the Year” with their incredible self-titled debut, Sweden’s ‘Death and Vanilla’ release their first 45 with The GPS late Jan. The mighty “From Above” has steadily been tearing up the blog sites with it’s ghostly video clip and killer reverb drenched, dreamy gentle psych hooks, since it’s airing at the start of the year.
A sublime 45, heavy on nods to 60s French Pop, Library Music and French / Italian soundtrack sounds from the same era not to mention the subtle use of vintage electronics- all fronted by the breathy vocals of Marleen Nilsson. Just gorgeous.
The duo formed in Malmo, Sweden on 2007 and with last year’s debut full length, the band found themselves riding high in many end of year charts, drawing comparisons with Broadcast, Stereolab and more recently Still Corners etc. Described in some quarters as a “thoughtful, magnificent psychedelic masterpiece”, the buzz for new recordings comes hotly anticipated and both new tunes here are killer.
The record is released as a red vinyl square 45 (no, really) and is numbered to 400 copies w/stickers and inserts and is without exaggeration, not only the first great 45 of 2013 but will sell out instantly…
