We’ve all had a titter about this band name here in Norman Towers, we’re a smutty-minded lot and who doesn’t like a bit of innuendo? Thankfully Big Naturals are more than just a clever name, and do in fact deal in punishing heavily distorted stoner rock jams, making a far more intense racket than you would expect from a bass-and-drums duo. The obvious reference point tone-wise for me is The Heads (and it’s no surprise to discover that bassist Gareth Turner is a long-time collaborator with Simon Price’s gang) - everything is blown out, rumbly, growly, tactile and powerful as they bundle from riff to riff. Lightning Bolt are another obvious band to mention but this is much more measured and stomping than their sassy speed-riffing, often reminding me of Gnod when they’re in freakout mode. Kim just said it sounds like two records playing at the same time, such is the terrific splintered squall they manage to conjure out of their instruments.
