This LP comes with a DVD which I don’t have the time or means to watch here so I’m just writing this review from the LP, which is a bit of a head-scratcher to be honest. I’ve been aware of experimental music legend/insignificant mortal Ghedalia Tazartes and his loopy weirdness for a while but never properly investigated it, and on this LP the Frenchman has travelled to Kerala in India and culled a load of samples from street music and dance to barking dogs to seagulls. He’s then cut his field recordings into skittish, flowing loops that sometimes groove tightly and sometimes just offer brief, fleeting glimpses of rhythm over droning synths and processed ethereal screeches.

There are occasional moments of sparse, minimal reflection such as ‘Cordes’, where icy buzzing drones drift over bubbling traditional percussion, or the weird falsetto piano creep-ballad ‘Shy’, but more often Tazartes concocts a crazy, babbling, hyperactive soup of sounds and beats in disorientating layers of flickering, lapping sound. Triumphant album closer ‘Alleluia’ is full of brass and strings and tumbling percussion and kind of sounds like every James Bond theme being played simultaneously. So much so that when I joked about it Brian genuinely asked ‘Is that actually what this is?’. It’s making him feel a bit queasy.

This record feels like the sound of the world flashing by so fast you can only pick up snatches, playing tricks on your imagination and your memory, hyperreal but intangible. Dizzyingly layered but still structured with a cheeky musicality. Absolutely bonkers but detailed, unique and mercurial weirdness from Tazartes. It’s not hard to see why this particular puny human has such a cult following.
