This Magnetik North is of course not to be confused with Erland Cooper’s The Magnetic North. This is the handiwork of Jaki Liebezeit and Ian Tregoning, and the press release sums up the processes more succinctly than I’m likely to, saying that it “is a fusion of live drums, acoustic instruments and electronic sequencing. drum performances are fed through processors, samplers and sequencers to produce layers of rhythmic patterns that interact with each other. the sounds from other instruments are melted into different textures so that only the harmonic content remains.”
What that means for us is a double LP full of spacious, intricate rhythms and gorgeous slow paced melodies taking us into sometimes unexpected places, from Moritz Von Oswald Trio-style outer space dub to sensuous slow-funk to future techno dipped in guitar feedback shimmer. It’s quite cold and spacious but at the same time really danceable and full of character, with playful grooves and subtle, intangible Burial-esque drift melodies. Late night listening which unfailingly manages to be both classy and fun.
