Mike was shocked the other day when I told him I had never seen Mugstar live. That is if you can imagine Mike actually registering anything as horrifying as shock. I think all of us here'd be quite disturbed to see his sleepy smiley face transmit such a contortion. I enjoy Mugstar, I really their like new album and am currently trying to work out how it compares to 'Lime' which is the last one I concentrated my efforts on. It takes a considerable amount of effort for me to listen to an album all the way through these days without getting completely distracted by something random such as a dying bee or a stray piece of coloured fluff. Or a cup of coffee made by Kim. I think my housemate just nailed it on the head when he said he knew he'd never heard this music before but there was something nigglingly familiar about them - I translate that as there being something universal and inclusive about their sound. Propulsion, repetition and implicit melodicism are the keys here. They're a psychedelic post-prog motorik bunch that don't try to be too clever or noodly. Mugstar create a heady, trippy world of their own without being pompous asses about it and when they bring forth the rock it's a twangy stoner shower rather than anything too bad-boy bludgeoning. Deftness of hand and subtlety - these guys are displaying in spades.
Axis is Mugstar’s long awaited fifth full length album - an expansive collection of songs that take the listener on a journey. The destination is not important it’s all about the journey - travelling through different movements, diverse colours and sounds picking up from where Lime left us in August 2011.
From the dark brooding (‘Black Fountain’) to the elevating (‘Tangerina’), the cylindrical (‘Axis Modulator’) and the sonic mantra (‘Upturnsidedown’) Axis showcases a more diverse MUGSTAR whilst retaining their unmistakeable sonic wall of sound. Albeit mainly instrumental, theres a real psychedelic groove that emanates from the kraut-rock inspired sounds of this record, it will shake you down in the same way the first time you copped earfuls of Oneida, Neu!, Loop, Wooden Shjips, Bardo Pondo and even a puff of Hawkwind.
