I’ve not happened upon this fellow before. I don’t even know if Mart Avi is his real name, but what he’s doing here is most tasty. It’s slow, sensual r’n’b with a kind of lounge-dub slant, soulful vocals and slinky looped grooves, along with a leftfield playfulness to the uncluttered production that’s reminding me a little of Portishead.
On ‘Noble Heart’ he creates shuffling rhythmic loops to accompany a quite dramatic, Arthur Russell-esque vocal for a relaxing and unusual cut which closes with a screeching synth throb crescendo overpowering all the ethereal shuffle-pop niceness. It’s synthpop with minimal techno roots, affecting, tasteful and genuinely odd-sounding. I’m now quite interested to hear a full-length from him, and according to the press release there’s one due in summer 2012 so I guess I won’t have to wait too long.
