Everyone here at Norman Towers was mightily impressed with Man of the Year Geoff Barrow’s BEAK>’s sophomore album a couple of months back, so it’s a treat to see that there’s this new split 12” with Toronto’s DD/MM/YYYY just arrived from Invada! The BEAK> side has ‘The Russian’, a surprisingly vocal-led cut for these guys with a bit of a stripped back, impassioned ‘80s pop feel to it, maybe even a touch of early Human League or Echo & the Bunnymen? Really not what I was expecting at all but a cool track. Then ‘Spittin’ Feathers’ is much more the sublime industrial hypno-kraut I was expecting with a two-note Carpenter synth pulse, bare percussion and feedback swells carving out a relentlessly intense bit of Blade Runner minimal with panicky treble bloops brought in towards the end. Ace.
