This is a re-issue of a 2009 album by Sprinkles (actually campaigner, sound manipulator and theorist Terre Thaemlitz) which is a tribute to the 42nd Street New York transsexual clubs destroyed by Walt Disney’s buyout of Times Square. Not that you can tell by the music, not in any way dark and seedy as you may imagine but glistening and uplifting.
The excellent title track is a relentless barrage of beats and sunny Rhodes piano but it is chilled out and laid back at the same time with only the flicker of sampled female voice distracting from the purpose of the track which seems to be to drive you into a gorgeous kind of stupor. ‘Ballr (Madonna Free Zone)’ is another stunner, using smooth, atmospheric synth, melodic bass and a 4/4 click to produce mesmerising mid-tempo house.
‘Brenda’s $20 Dilemma’ is pure unbridled euphoric laid back house with flute trills and gorgeous piano stabs. I’m failing to find a note in this album which I don’t find utterly delightful. It’s probably the house music album I was born to enjoy and it’s melodic to the hilt, full of energy and enterprise, yet remaining thought-provoking. One of those times where glass half empty types like me worry, ‘If I’m enjoying it this much on first listen, surely I’ll like it less on subsequent plays?’ But for the moment I’m wallowing in the gorgeous sounds of this extremely impressive album.

Subtle and moving melodies, deeper than deep basslines within thoughtful contexts - a sheer masterpiece, and a classic for the ages. Thank you, Terre.
