Cut Hands AKA William Bennett is back with a superb 12” for Blackest Ever Black. The 12” precedes his forthcoming second album which is of major excitement to me. If you heard his ‘Afro Noise’ album I guess you pretty much know what to expect as the alias has him working under a fairly constrained aesthetic which is fine by me.
Essentially this is more expertly crafted heavy tribal / Afro rhythms pounding and clanking away with sounds captured from his vast collection of African instruments and then sequenced using computer. ‘Black Mamba’ is actually pretty darn funky and when cranked up loud it really blows the cobwebs out. I’d love to hear these primal rhythms blasting out of a massive soundsystem.
Meanwhile ‘Krokodilo Theme’ is a different kettle of fish entirely. Zero percussion is present and is replaced by some really heart wrenching synth orchestrations. A sweet tune indeed but ‘Black Mamba’ is thee absolute monster!
