There is literally no distinction between the Nils Quak record and this one. When I exchanged discs no-one noticed. Again, it’s an album of ambient drones, a lot more soothing than old Quakky and with much more variation of sound.
This album was recorded at a time in Tor’s life when he was immersing himself in portrait studies of local maritime themes and nautical life at the docks (the pubs were shut) and so the album has a very transparent nautical theme. You can here the gently undulating waves and the weirdly haunting shipyard sound throughout the album.
It’s a deeply resonant if highly minimalist work and it comes as a relief when a slow bassline on ‘Tugboats in Fog’ breaks the fug of drone. It’s overlaid with creepy voice samples and atonal clanking. The packaging is lovely, with beautiful artwork by the artist himself, limited to 500 copies and comes with download code so you can blast it out on the bus.
