The last thing I read about Bloc Party was that the other three were rehearsing without the singer who was off doing his own thing, possibly posing semi-naked everywhere or whatever he does when he doesn’t do this.
I half expected them to turn up with another singer in tow but they’ve obviously patched up their differences as the original foursome is intact. Like Maximo Park, it seems to be a case of diminishing returns now with this lot, each album significantly less successful than the previous. Bloc Party for me were always four very good musicians in search of a tune. The reviews for their upcoming album have not been good so I expected horrifying things from this but it’s not too bad. It has no particularly memorable chorus and it seems to have stopped before it even began but at least they are not doing the cheesy electronic stuff that littered their last couple of albums.
Instead it’s in a future rock style that sounds like an energised TV on the Radio with distorted vocals and a nice piece of out of tune bass playing in the chorus. The flip is a forgettable and tinny rock workout that bursts into a half life in the chorus before disappearing up its own backside. Surprisingly not totally awful, they’ll probably stagger along for another few years powering out the back catalogue.
