I remember enjoying these guys’ last one on Night People so I’ve got high hopes for this one here. It opens with a crazy bit of multi-vocal counterpoint which is quite poppy but things soon get synthy as it turns into a curious little slice of weirdpop which sounds like a lo-fi bedroom take on the Flying Pickets and Stereolab, often with very minimal, wonky, synth-led arrangements.
Sometimes the melodic shapes are hypnotic and repetitive, other times more disjointed and awkward, at points they even dip into a kind of Peaking Lights-esque synth-tropical mode which is totally chill and I’m appreciating a lot, but they’re much more oddball than the ‘Lights, but in a physical post-punky homemade way rather than heading in a slick, ethereal Laurel Halo sort of direction. Some parts are really reminding me of Dan Deacon, which is good, right? Yeah, it’s kind of like Dan Deacon’s slightly weirder early stuff crossed with Stereolab, so dead nice basically.
