Jazzman’s Jukebox Jam series has a treat for you fans of vintage recordings this week in the shape of this 10” (with a little sticker like an old-style 78) with a load of mambo-style cuts from way back in the 1950s. My parents weren’t even born when these tracks first dropped!
My personal highlights are the cheeky opener ‘Hot Mamma’, which sees Ethel Brown sleaze it up with backing from The Chanters, and Chuck Higgins instrumental ‘Blues N Mambo’ on the flip which has some wild honking sax and busy blues piano whipping up a storm. All five tracks on here are wonderful, though, and sound amazingly crisp and well produced when you consider they were recorded 60 years ago, with the brass sounding as bright and alive as if it was committed to tape yesterday. Brilliant stuff. Nice vivid screenprinted sleeves too.
